Fiber vs Cable Internet

What Is Fiber Internet?

Fiber optic internet is the most advanced form of internet available. Michigan Broadband Services has built a state-of-the-art fiber network allowing you to stay connected to the things you love with a reliable, affordable, fast connection.

Michigan Broadband Services provides:

  • All equipment
  • Equipment installation
  • 24/7 local support

Fiber Optic Vs. Cable Internet

Fast only begins to describe the type of connection you can get with Michigan Broadband Services. Using fiber optics means there's greater bandwidth to seamlessly connect to 10+ devices all at once. Fiber users can stream movies, shows and music with less waiting for a better online experience.

Fiber optic internet uses cutting edge technology. Information is sent via small, flexible strands of glass that transmit light. This allows data to be sent faster over greater distances.

Traditional cable internet uses cable TV infrastructure to transmit data. Although cable internet does not interfere with your television, you may have to share the connection with your neighbors.

There are fewer fiber optic-based internet service providers on the market. Not all fiber optic networks reach all cities and neighborhoods, although that footprint is expanding.

Which Is Better?

Fiber optic internet sends data faster than basic cable. It's delivered on a dedicated line, which facilitates more consistent speed than cable. This is true even during peak usage times.

Fiber optic internet is more reliable and immune to many of the conditions that affect cable internet.

  • Fiber optic internet is less likely to go down during a power outage.
  • Because fiber optic internet is made of glass, there is no electricity involved. This protects it against interference from nearby power lines or high voltage electrical equipment. This also helps reduce the risk of fire.
  • The private network installed to your home makes fiber optic internet harder to hack.
  • Fiber can withstand more temperature fluctuations than cable. It can also be submerged in water.

What Is The Cost?

Fiber optic internet service can be more expensive than basic cable internet, but you’re getting more. More providers now offer a fiber optic option. It’s becoming more cost-efficient to install fiber optic networks than to maintain antiquated copper systems.

History Of Fiber Optics

The concept of light transmission has existed since the early 1840’s when inventors Daniel Colladon and Jacques Babinet demonstrated the guiding of light over distance by refraction (refraction is the bending of a light or sound wave).

In the mid 1850’s, inventor John Tyndall performed a demonstration using water fountains. These early experiments led to the development of television when inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the transmission of moving images at the London Institute in 1925.

In 1952, physicist Narinder Singh Kapany invented the first actual fiber optical cable based on John Tyndall’s experiments three decades earlier.

The barrier was broken in 1970 by four research scientists working for Corning Glass Works (now Corning Inc.), Since then, fiber optic has become the standard for many industries.

Optical fiber is used as a medium for more than just telecommunication and computer networking. It is especially advantageous for long-distance communications, because light moves through the fiber with much greater success compared to electrical cables.

Here’s why:

Internet: Fiber optic cables transmit large amounts of data at very high speeds. This technology is therefore widely used in internet cables. As compared to traditional copper wires, fibre optic cables are less bulky, lighter, more flexible and carry more data.

Phones: Calling telephones within or outside the country has never been so easy. With the use of fiber optic communication, you can connect faster and have clear conversations without any lag on either side.

Networking: Working/networking between computers in a single building or across nearby structures is made easier and faster with the use of fiber optic cables. Users can see a marked decrease in the time it takes to transfer files and information across networks.

Television: The use of fiber optic cables in the transmission of cable signals has grown explosively over the years. These cables are ideal for transmitting signals for high definition televisions because they have greater bandwidth and speed. Also, fiber optic cables are cheaper as compared to the same quantity of copper wire.

Medical Usage: Fiber optic cables are widely used in the fields of medicine and research. Optical communication is an important part of non-intrusive surgical methods, popularly known as endoscopy. In such applications, a minute, bright light is used to light up the surgery area within the body; making it possible to reduce the number and size of incisions made. Fiber optics are also used in microscopy and biomedical research.

Automobiles: Fiber cables play an important role in the lighting and safety features of present-day automobiles. They are widely used in lighting, both in the interior and exterior of vehicles. Because of its ability to conserve space and provide superior lighting, fiber optics are used in more vehicles every day. Also, fiber optic cables can transmit signals between different parts of the vehicle at lightning speed. This makes them invaluable in the use of safety applications such as traction control and airbags.

Lighting: The use of fiber optics in the area of decorative illumination has also grown over the years. Fiber optic cables provide an easy, economical and attractive solution to lighting projects. As a result, they are widely used in lighting decorations and illuminated Christmas trees.

Security: With the high level of data security required in military and aerospace applications, fiber optic cables offer the ideal solution for data transmission in these areas.

Fiber optic cables have an array of uses that go beyond what most people are aware of. Your business or home can now be a part of the future. Fiber is available now! Fiber costs less and out-performs everything. Put the power of Fiber Optic to work for you today, and be prepared for the future.
